Many travelers don't realize that the Ngorongoro Conservation Area spans far beyond its famous crater. On its north-western border, adjoining the southern Serengeti, lie the vast short-grass plains of Ndutu. Between mid-December and March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest migrate here. The nutrient- and calcium-rich grass, fertilized by ancient volcanic ash, provides the perfect nourishment for lactating mothers and newborn calves. Over 8,000 calves are born daily, attracting an unparalleled concentration of predators—lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas.

Combined with a descent into the UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Crater, this program packs Tanzania's most thrilling wildlife encounters into three action-packed days.

DAY-BY-DAY ITINERARY

DAY 1: Arusha – Ndutu Region (Ngorongoro Conservation Area)

Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from Arusha, journeying west through the scenic highlands of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards the Ndutu plains. Arrive in time for lunch at your safari camp, followed by an exhilarating afternoon-to-sunset game drive. Track the massive wildebeest herds spread across the savanna and spot predators on the prowl. Return to camp in the evening for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Overnight: Ndutu area (e.g., Africa Safari Ndutu, Ndutu Heritage Camp, or similar)

DAY 2: Full Day in the Ndutu Region

Spend a full day exploring the high-action Ndutu ecosystem. With off-road driving permitted in key zones, your guide can bring you remarkably close to wildebeest mothers with newborn calves, dramatic predator hunts, and rich birdlife around Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek. Enjoy a full-day game drive with a packed picnic lunch in the wild or return to camp for lunch before an afternoon drive.

DAY 3: Ndutu – Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha

Rise early for a morning departure from Ndutu towards the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Descend 600 meters onto the crater floor for a game drive inside the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. Experience an amazing density of wildlife, including the Big Five and the rare black rhino. After a scenic picnic lunch near the hippo pool, ascend the crater walls and begin your return journey to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon/evening.
